Research Software Management Training

Would you like to get the background to start writing code for research, stay up to date on research software management practices, and help tailor this new training? Consider joining us in this pilot training.

Content

The pilot training course consists of three components with the following order: 1) an online self-study material where you have two weeks to work on, 2) a half-day interactive session, and 3) finalizing with a draft of your research software uploaded to your GitHub repository.

  • Online Self-Study Course
You will begin with an online self-study material that provides instructions for completing the module. This online self-study course helps you draft an initial Research Software Management Plan (SMP), which you should bring to the interactive session.
  • Interactive Sessions
After reading the online self-study course in canvas and writing the first draft of the SMP, you will join a half-day interactive session focusing on research software management practices tailored to your code management needs. Software stewards will introduce research software management levels (low, medium, and high) and you can ask questions and have discussions with peers. Details of the session will be communicated through email.
  • Final Research Software Management Plan (optional)
Following the interactive session, you will be expected to revise your research software using GitHub, and software stewards will guide you through the process.

This training is for:

First-year UT PhD candidates and researchers with an interest in starting to code for research purposes. We advise signing up for the Research Software Management training if you aim to develop digital competencies, or if you expect that writing code or scripts will help you answer your research questions during your PhD or research project.

Learning objectives

At the end of this training, you will:

  • understand the research software policy and guideline
  • understand research software management, quality, reuse, and reproducibility
  • be able to evaluate the value of your research software as a scientific output
  • be able to apply the recommended research software management workflow at UT
  • create your research software management plan (SMP)
