Students also have to register for Multi-Factor Authentication to use UT applications 23-11-2021

Why Multi-Factor Authentication?
The University of Twente must take into account the ever-increasing cyber threats and privacy protection and therefore started to use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). All employees are already using MFA at the University of Twente and as of November 23rd, all students have to register as well for MFA to use UT applications.

What is MFA?
MFA adds an extra layer of security to the login procedure. This log-on method is also used by the government (DigiD) and banks for secure online banking. After entering your student email address and password, a second authentication step is required through a separate device, e.g. a mobile phone. This two-step verification method makes it harder for malicious parties to gain access to your account.

What will be the impact?
All students will have to log on with MFA to continue to use UT applications. From November 23rd, extra verification is requested via an app on your phone.

What is needed for MFA?

  • MFA requires a mobile phone or tablet on which an authenticator app (e.g. Microsoft Authenticator) can be installed.
  • The app from the App Store (Apple) or Google Play Store (Android).
  • A PC to access an application for which Multi-Factor Authentication is enabled.
  • Your UT account.

How to set up MFA?

  1. On your PC: Open an application for which Multi-Factor Authentication is enabled e.g. Canvas, Microsoft 365.
  2. On your PC: Log on with your UT e-mail address and password.
  3. On your PC: Now you see a message “More information required”. Click Next.
  4. On your phone: Install the Microsoft Authenticator app (Android, iOS)
  5. On your phone: Open the Microsoft Authenticator
  6. On your pc: Click Next.
  7. On your phone: Allow the app to access the camera and add an account.
  8. On your phone: Select Work or School and click Next
  9. On your phone: Scan the QR code displayed on the pc and click Next.
  10. On your phone: A test notification is sent, please unlock your phone with a fingerprint, face, or PIN and approve.
