TIIM for participants

Join the Twente Panel today!

The Twente Intervention and Interaction Machine (TIIM) is an app developed by the BMS Lab. It is used by researchers, teachers, and students at the University of Twente to run studies and questionnaires. Through the TIIM app, you can answer questions, receive information, and provide feedback as part of a study.

In addition, TIIM also connects you with ongoing research that matters. The Twente Panel is a special pool of people who have expressed interest in participating in research projects. When you opt in, you give yourself the chance to be invited to new and exciting studies that match your interests. Every time you join a study, you help scientists collect meaningful data that shapes scientific knowledge. Your participation makes science better and more relevant to everyday life.

The app may also send notifications, show interactive content, or collect wearable data if needed. TIIM studies are designed to be safe and private: the system is GDPR compliant and uses secure, certified infrastructure.

Join the Twente Panel – Help Shape the Future of Science

Why Your Contribution Matters

Participating in the Twente Panel means:

  • You get invitations to new research studies
  • Your responses help researchers understand real‑life questions and develop new insights that can impact health, behaviour, technology, and society
  • You become part of a community of people directly contributing to advancements in science, from understanding daily behaviours to improving health and wellbeing.

How to Join the Panel

Joining the Twente Panel is easy – you can tap yes on the notification asking you to join when you first use TIIM or you can go to settings and find the option to join the participantpant pool. Toggle the setting and you are in!

Once you’re in, you may be invited to participate in future research that interests you. You can change your preferences at any time.

Configuration

Notifications

The researcher may choose to send notifications through the study. These can be either push notifications (for example, to inform you that a module is available) or email notifications (for example, to let you know that the study has started). Hence, it is recommended that you turn on the notifications.

Health data and digital footprint

If needed, TIIM can collect data related to your health: heart rate, hours of sleep and number steps or your device information: GPS and battery life. When the study requires the collection of such data and you consent to it, you should switch this setting on. In the cases when this setting is turned on, but the study does not collect such data, the data will not be collected. You can always switch this setting off in the settings of the app.

Languages

TIIM is available in three languages: English, Dutch and German. By pressing on the language in which you would like to use TIIM, you can select the language in which you would like to use the app.

Studies

Under studies, you can see the studies in which you are enrolled in and the language in which they are available. On the right ride, you will see the option to sign out. By pressing sign out, you will unsubscribe yourself from the study, and you will not receive any new modules. The researcher will be able to see that you unsubscribed.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

I do not receive notifications. What should I do?

If you do not receive notifications, please check that you have enabled notifications on via the app and the phone's settings. Ensure that the phone is not put in a mode that disables notifications.

Are the participants anonymous?

Each participant is assigned an ID and the researchers can view the ID in their final data download. However, during administering the study, they are able to see the names and your study progess.

The researchers can check which settings are enables or disabled in your app.

I do not see a study. What now?

If you do not see the study in which you registered, contact the research team to check if you have been assigned to it and what the start date of the study is. It is possible that you are regietered to a study that has not started yet.
