New BMS Open Access Fund 2020

Hopefully awaiting a new UT OA fund, we have decided to open up a new BMS Open Access 2020 fund, effective as of 1 August 2020 and available until the end of 2020!

BMS wants to stimulate Open Science, as communicated in the recent email including the 'BMS Open Science survey' results. Part of the actions resulting from that survey is an agreement with publisher Cogitatio press, facilitating 100% discount in 4 journals (e.g. Media and Communication, & Politics and Governance journal), but more importantly, the Faculty Board of BMS decided to renew the earlier (2019) appreciated BMS Open Access fund for 2020!
BMS will reimburse publication costs for (high-quality) open-access journal articles accepted in the period August-December 2020*. We do not reimburse retrospectively for the first part of 2020. Reimbursement depends on the criteria below and needs to be requested before the end of 2020. If OA-publication reimbursement is already part of your project budget (NWO, ZonMW have this often arranged) you cannot opt for the BMS OA fund.
* get in contact if your research work falls just beyond this period and we can see what is possible.

Requirements to opt for the BMS OA fund

You are eligible for a reimbursement if you meet each of the following conditions:

1.      You are the corresponding author of the article.
2.      Your employment as the author of the article is at the BMS faculty.
3.      The article states the University of Twente as your affiliation.
4.      The article is published in a (high-quality) open-access journal that is registered in the Directory of Open Access Journals.
5.      You can only apply for reimbursement if your article is accepted in the period Aug-Dec 2020. The publisher’s invoice has been paid by the department between August 1st and December 31st. BMS will reimburse the department. Article publications and book chapters will be funded to a maximum of 1500€, books to a max of €10.000.
7.      You have not received another grant for covering the cost of publishing this article open access. Reimbursements are only given for costs made by the University of Twente. It is allowed to opt for reimbursement if the journal only gives an APC discount such as BMC and MDPI.

Is your publication in a subscription-based journal? Then there are other good alternatives to make it open access:

Besides the paid way of Open Access Publishing we ask your attention for the other options that are without costs:

1.       If you publish in a ‘hybrid’ OA journal, you can often publish OA for free thanks to national deals with the publisher. This includes over two thousand journals and can be checked via the UT Journal Browser. Please note that it is crucial to address this deal (and request open access) when the article is accepted for publication.

2.       If the official publication is not OA, you can still make your work available via ‘green’ Open Access: for example by making use of the Taverne amendment, or by sharing the author version that was accepted for publication in our repository the UT Research Information system (Pure).
