Professor Energy and Gender, CSTM, University of Twente
Joy Clancy is a Professor in Development Studies specializing in Gender and Energy. Joy has a PhD in Engineering (alternative fuels for small stationary engines). She joined the University of Twene in 1989. Joy’s research has focused, for more than 30 years, on small scale energy systems for developing countries, including the technology transfer process and the role that energy plays as an input for small businesses and the potential it offers entrepreneurs, particularly women, through the provision of a new infrastructure service. Gender and energy has been an important factor addressed in this research. Recently she has been working on social inclusion and exclusion in biofuel value chains and the impacts on poverty.
She is a founder member of ENERGIA, the international network on Gender for whom she currently the Principal Investigator in a 5 year £4.5 million research project funded by the UK’s Department for International Development (DfID): Building the Evidence Base for Improving Energy Investments Effectiveness by Taking a Gendered Approach (http://energia.org/research/). From 2009 to 2013 Dr Clancy was a technical advisor on gender and energy to the World Bank AFREA Programme. She has recently contributed to the Global Tracking Framework 2015 Report.
