Ensuring universal access to sustainable forms of energy is a key global development goal and is essential to improving the lives and livelihoods of women and men around the world. Energy enhances the well-being of women and men through the production of goods, as well as the provision of services including access to water, health, education and communication. However, national energy frameworks are not gender neutral, as these policy decisions can have implications for women’s empowerment and gender equality between women and men.
To understand the extent to which gender is being mainstreamed in energy policies, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Global Gender Office (GGO) and ENERGIA, the International Network on Gender and Sustainable Development, conducted an assessment of 192 energy policies and frameworks from 137 developed and developing countries. The assessment was developed through IUCN’s Gender Equality for Climate Change Opportunities (GECCO) initiative, a five-year program financially supported by USAID, utilizing the Environment and Gender Information (EGI) platform methodology. This presentation will showcase the main findings of the assessment as well as introduce further questions for research and suggest next steps for progressing the gender equality agenda in the energy sector.
