Landscaping the Roombeek

The city of Enschede and UT's campus have always been connected. By landscaping the Roombeek above ground, this natural connection has been preserved.

After the fireworks disaster in the Roombeek neighbourhood in 2000, a redesign of the area was needed. It was then decided to make the old Roombeek flow above ground again. The stream now twists and turns all the way from the neighbourhood to the campus.

In 2012, the Vechtstromen Water Board constructed the ingenious underpass under the Drienerlolaan: an impressive feat of engineering art. To emphasize the connection of the city and the campus by water and promote biodiversity, an artwork was installed above the underpass. Plants that help local insect species thrive have been planted around the underpass as well.
