District heating network

Twente's ambition is to be an energy-neutral region by 2050. The fourteen Twente municipalities, Vechtstromen Water Board, Province of Overijssel, Twence, the Twente housing corporations, University of Twente and the grid operators Coteq and Enexis are working together to realize that ambition. One of the initiatives helping achieve this is district heating.

Most buildings on campus are heated by district heating. This heat is generated at the Twence waste- and biomass energy plant in Hengelo.  A lot of heat is released during the treatment processes at Twence. The leftover heat is supplied as hot water to the district heating network. Via a main pipeline from Twence it goes to co-generation plants for further distribution from there. The heat networks of Enschede and Hengelo, including the University of Twente, already receive residual heat from Twence. UT uses this hot water to heat our buildings and take further steps towards our goal of an energy-neutral campus.
