GEO-ICT expert (fulltime)

The Department of Geo Information Processing (GIP) is a vibrant, multi-disciplinary scientific team, specializing in methods and techniques for processing (acquiring, organizing, analysing) spatio-temporal data and information, and in building tools (models, algorithms, visualizations) that improve our understanding of complex and dynamic spatial systems and help in decision-making at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The diversity of research efforts of the department requires a dedicated geo-ICT expert who will lead the development of the GIP computational infrastructure, coordinates future procurement and training activities, and helps develop new solutions to meet the requirements of teaching, research and projects.

Job description

The Department of Geo Information Processing (GIP) is a vibrant, multi-disciplinary scientific team, specializing in methods and techniques for processing (acquiring, organizing, analysing) spatio-temporal data and information, and in building tools (models, algorithms, visualizations) that improve our understanding of complex and dynamic spatial systems and help in decision-making at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The diversity of research efforts of the department requires a dedicated geo-ICT expert who will lead the development of the GIP computational infrastructure, coordinates future procurement and training activities, and helps develop new solutions to meet the requirements of teaching, research and projects.


The tasks to be carried out by you include (but are not limited to):

  • (Help) identify and develop geospatial software and specific solutions in research, education and project settings;
  • Stay abreast of developments in geospatial software and understand which are important for the department;
  • Support in teaching and/or teach software-technical components of our curricula;
  • Design and implementation of open source solutions for cloud computing, geospatial software stacks: databases, web services, workflows, and geo visualization.

Your profile

You should have an MSc in Computer Science or Geoinformatics or a closely related field, and several years of experience with free and open source software solutions through working in a geo-IT environment or in geospatial research. You should have proficiency in

  • Programming skills for handling geospatial data / workflows / visualization / AR & VR (e.g. Python, SQL, R, Javascript, D3)
  • Software development skills (e.g. versioning, documentation, Github) 

And least have knowledge of three of the following domains and a demonstrable interest in acquiring proficiency in the remaining ones:

  • (Spatial) databases (e.g. spatial SQL, PostGIS)
  • Distributed processing environments (e.g. Apache Hadoop and/or Spark)
  • Cloud computing (e.g. Open Stack)
  • Geoweb services and OGC standards (e.g. MapServer, Geoserver, SWE)
  • Mobile app development (e.g. Android)
  • Didactic skills to support teaching of programming skills

We offer an inspiring international environment. You will be initially employed for two years. Extension of the employment after this period is a possibility.   • Gross monthly salary between € 3.637,-- and € 4.978,-- depending on experience and qualifications (job profile Developer ICT 2).
  • A holiday allowance of 8 % of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3 %

The Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente provides international postgraduate education, research and project services in the field of geo-information science and earth observation using remote sensing and GIS.
