We invite applicants for a postdoctoral research position to investigate and evaluate the teaching of higher-order academic skills in engineering education. Are you passionate about education? Do you want to contribute to the educational innovations that we are currently implementing in our engineering education? In this project, you will take part in an interdisciplinary team of teachers, educational scientists, and philosophers of science. Our mission is preparing students for the 21st Century in which technological and societal developments progress faster than knowledge of experts, which requires intellectual resilience and agility. The challenge is how to teach and learn academic skills, such as creative, critical, and interdisciplinary thinking, needed in scientific research, design, and decision making. The project includes the design, execution, and evaluation of project-led engineering education focussing on biomedical engineering, technical medicine, and health sciences.

We are looking for a Post-doc able to conduct this interdisciplinary project, in which you bring together insights and social science methods from educational sciences, educational psychology, and philosophy of science to: (i) investigate and explain the difficulties of teaching and learning academic skills, (ii) develop pedagogical and educational measures for improvement, (iii) operationalize and implement these measures, (iv) monitor and evaluate the results, and (v) disseminate and publish.

This project is a collaboration between the Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Societal Sciences (BMS), the Faculty of Applied Sciences (TNW), the Technical Medical Centre (TechMed), the BMS research theme Learning (ILLUSTRATE), the Department of Philosophy, the ELAN department of Teacher Development, and the 4TU Centre for Engineering Education (4TU-CEE).

You will be a member of the philosophy department, but also be closely associated with researchers in the other departments, and with teachers teams in biomedical engineering and technical medicine. We expect you to coordinate relevant ties and collaborations between these researchers, teachers, and educational programs.

Your profile

  • You are a highly motivated researcher, who has a passion for the quality of higher education. We encourage a high degree of responsibility and independence while collaborating with close colleagues, researchers and other university staff.
  • You have good team spirit and like to work in a challenging, interdisciplinary setting, and motivated to expand your expertise in other fields relevant to this project.
  • Ph.D. or HBO+ degree in one or more of the following fields: engineering science, educational science, educational psychology, or philosophy of science, with a proven background or affinity with the other fields.
  • Capable of working interdisciplinary, and drawing relevant links between disciplines.
  • Ability to write research projects.
  • An original thinker with excellent analytical, interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
  • Proficient in written and oral Dutch and English.

Our offer

  • A fulltime (38 hours per week) postdoctoral position for a duration of 36 months.
  • A salary between € 3255 and € 4274 gross per month, depending on your education and experience.
