Postdoc Position in Radio Systems

Job description

The group of Radio Systems (RS) within the University of Twente (UT), 4TU Federation, the Netherlands, has a vacancy for a Postdoc position with the aim to define and develop a novel framework for the Joint Communication and Sensing (JCAS), a key feature for 6G.

Radar and communication systems have been historically separated worlds. With the demand for super-high-throughput wireless connectivity for not only the mobile use, but also the smarty factory, connected robotics/machines/vehicles, and personalized remote health monitoring, the sensing of the surrounding environment while communicating becomes crucial, e.g., for reliable high-speed communication free from blockage, for safety or route planning, etc. With the use of high frequencies (beyond sub-6GHz, going to mmWave and sub-THz) and the dedicated antenna array systems, the available spectrum, small wavelength, high sampling speed result in high delay-angular-temporal resolutions that benefit both communication and sensing. Despite of the challenges in waveform design, array aperture design, radio resource allocation, signal processing, data analytics and in other layers, within the stringent performance requirements, the integration of communication and sensing is promising to enable the future intelligent networks.

Your profile

  • We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and self-driven researcher.
  • You have, or will shortly acquire, a PhD/Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • You have a technical background in wireless communication or radar sensing, antennas and radio propagation, signal processing (e.g., parameter estimation, radio blocks design), applied electromagnetics. Experience with data analytics, optimization or machine learning is a plus. Experience with radio system prototyping (MIMO, software-defined radio, etc.) would be a big plus.
  • You think independently, develop creative and original work, and are a problem solver with excellent analytical and communication skills.
  • You want to work in international and multi-disciplinary environments.
  • You are proficient in English, both speaking and writing.
  • You have hand-on publication, programming (e.g., Matlab, FPGA) and measurement skills.
  • You will mainly work on research (combined with theory, simulation, prototyping, measurement), and will be engaged in developing research project proposal. You may also be engaged in teaching activities (not the main duty). You will have chance to extend your network and work with national/international experts in relevant fields.

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Universities (CAO) and include:

  • You will be appointed on a temporary full time Postdoc position for one year, with a potential to be extended to two years, upon mutual agreement;
  • Gross salary between € 3.408,- and € 4.474,- per month depending on experience and qualifications;
  • Excellent benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, a year-end bonus of 8.3% and a solid pension scheme;
  • You can make use of excellent facilities for professional and personal development and a training program in which you and your supervisor will make up a plan for additional suitable education and supervision.
  • You will receive good secondary conditions, in accordance with the collective labor agreement CAO-NU for Dutch universities.

About the department

The areas of research that are within the scope of the Radio Systems group are: Radio Propagation and Channel Modelling, Antenna Systems, and Signal Processing. Within these research areas, it is the vision of the RS group that progress will lead to a society where we will be able to interconnect anything, anywhere, anytime under all conditions. Especially the last aspect (under all conditions) is of primary importance for the RS group. Another equally important element of our vision is that unobtrusive wireless monitoring is just at the start of its evolution. Radar has been with us for more than a century but, because the realization of THz electronic systems is becoming (economically) feasible, there are new opportunities for high resolution sensing techniques, not only for professional markets, but also for the consumer market.

Based on the areas of research for the RS group a number of applications are being addressed: next generation communication systems e..g. 5G/6G, wireless sensor nodes, radar, health monitoring, and surveillance. Furthermore, the RS group aims at the development of measurement facilities like reverberation chambers and methods for over-the-air (OTA) characterization of channels. The RS group has ongoing projects in the areas of antennas and antenna arrays, channel sounding, -modelling and -emulation, Wireless sensing, (narrowband) communication systems, signal processing and wireless coexistence.
