Flexure-based mechanisms represent high-precision alternatives to conventional rigid links mechanisms, since they rely on elastic deformation and operate without hysteresis. Design challenges lie in the complex stiffness behavior and the inherent limit on the maximum strain. This project will develop strategies for modeling and optimization of flexure designs.
The idea is to rely on a unified framework for automating and improving the design process of mechanical components. The port-Hamiltonian formalism possesses all the desirable properties: it can handle complex systems by modularly interconnecting their basic components and keeping track of the energy exchange!
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to strengthen our research. Your research will focus on the development of new mathematical models and efficient numerical methods. The starting point is the inclusion of geometric nonlinearities in port-Hamiltonian beams and plates. The resulting dynamical models have to be numerically implemented in a way that preserves the continuous properties at the discrete level. The numerical models can then be used for analysis and topology optimization of flexure-based designs.
- A MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Proficient in written and oral English.
- Strong, proven programming skills in MATLAB and/or Python.
- The ability to operate at the intersection of various fields.
- A high degree of responsibility and independence, able to collaborate with colleagues, researchers, and other university staff.
- Experience with finite element libraries and numerical methods would further strengthen the application.
