Postdoc microscope design – X-VIEW

Job description

The project

At the Biomedical Photonic Imaging group of the University of Twente, a team lead by prof. Ivo Vellekoop is developing radically new approaches to microscopy. The aim of your project is to construct a prototype of a new microscope with an extremely large field of view for use in neuroscience and other life sciences.

Our team

As pioneers of complex wavefront shaping, we are continuously working on improving imaging in extreme situations, including imaging through non-transparent objects. In our multidisciplinary team we cover a broad spectrum of topics, reaching from fundamental research on light propagation, and the development of extremely efficient numerical methods, to machine learning and experimental microscopy. We offer a very open, dynamic, and collaborative environment where you can broaden your horizon and contribute your expertise to numerous other projects.

Your profile

Are you interested in taking up this challenge? We are looking for an experimentally skilled researcher:

  • Experience with optics design in Zemax or other ray-tracing software.
  • Experience in designing and building optical setups, preferably imaging systems.
  • Proficient in MATLAB, Python, C or other programming language.
  • You have a good command of the English language both verbally and in writing.
  • You like to work in an inspiring, multi-disciplinary team of researchers and engage with potential industrial partners.

What will you do?

In this project you will:

  • Design a novel type of microscope, minimizing aberrations over a large field of view and balancing trade-offs to meet the required specifications.
  • Use our code framework to implement and improve wavefront shaping algorithms for obtaining sharp images in extreme circumstances.
  • Work together closely with end users and industrial partners to demonstrate these novel concepts in proof-of-concept optical experiments.
  • Publish your work and present at top conferences.

Our offer

In accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, the gross salary for a postdoc is in scale 10-4 (€ 3.408,-- gross per month), plus a holiday allowance (8%), and end-year bonus (8,3%) of the annual salary. The assignment is 18 months, with a possible extension depending on the funding situation after that period. The University of Twente provides excellent campus facilities, and actively supports your professional and personal development.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status.

Information and application

Do you want to help us to revolutionize microscopy? Please upload your application, including a letter of motivation, CV, a copy of your PhD thesis, and names/contact information of 2 or more references to http://www.utwente.nl/vacatures/en as soon as possible, but not after 1 October 2021. An interview and presentation will be part of the selection procedure. Please motivate your interest and fitness for this specific project. Applications with non-specific motivation letters are not taken into consideration. Funding for this project was obtained from the Dutch Research Council (NWO)

About the organization

TNW Faculty (Faculty of Science & Technology)

The Faculty of Science & Technology (Technische Natuurwetenschappen, TNW) engages some 700 staff members and 2000 students in education and research on the cutting edge of chemical technology, applied physics and biomedical technology. Our fields of application include sustainable energy, process technology and materials science, nanotechnology and technical medicine. As part of a people-first tech university that aims to shape society, individuals and connections, our faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad, and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. Our research has a high profile both in the Netherlands and internationally and is strengthened by the many young researchers working on innovative projects with as doctoral candidates and post-docs. It has been accommodated in three multidisciplinary UT research institutes: Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Centre and Digital Society Institute.

University of Twente (UT)

University of Twente (UT) has entered the new decade with an ambitious, new vision, mission and strategy. As ‘the ultimate people-first university of technology' we are rapidly expanding on our High Tech Human Touch philosophy and the unique role it affords us in society. Everything we do is aimed at maximum impact on people, society and connections through the sustainable utilisation of science and technology. We want to contribute to the development of a fair, digital and sustainable society through our open, inclusive and entrepreneurial attitude. This attitude permeates everything we do and is present in every one of UT's departments and faculties. Building on our rich legacy in merging technical and social sciences, we focus on five distinguishing research domains: Improving healthcare by personalised technologies; Creating intelligent manufacturing systems; Shaping our world with smart materials; Engineering our digital society; and Engineering for a resilient world.

As an employer, University of Twente offers jobs that matter. We equip you as a staff member to shape new opportunities both for yourself and for our society. With us, you will be part of a leading tech university that is changing our world for the better. We offer an open, inclusive and entrepreneurial climate, in which we encourage you to make healthy choices, for example, with our flexible, customisable conditions.
