Project description

Many industrial processes produce large amounts of aqueous waste streams (10 – 100 m³/h), contaminated with, e.g. solvents or other organic components. Treatment of these streams requires substantial amounts of energy and chemicals. Implementation of nanofiltration membranes can lead to significant energy savings. To develop suitable ceramic nanofiltration membranes, a new international project will start in Q4, 2020.

 In this project novel, low fouling, silicon-carbide nanofiltration membranes will be developed. First, a layer with nanopores will be applied by either pyrolysis of a pre-ceramic polymer or by the use of suspension coating techniques. To further decrease the pore size, the top of this layer will subsequently be modified with atomic layer deposition (ALD), a self-limiting gas-phase technique for growing atomic-scale thin films. The ALD technology will enable us to tune the pore size of the resulting membrane on an atomic scale. The performance of the developed membranes will be tested in filtration experiments, using industrial waste stream as well as surface water.

In the project, two PhD students (one in the Inorganic Membranes group of the University of Twente and the other in Delft University of Technology), six companies, and two institutes will join their forces. The Inorganic Membranes group is part of the Membrane Science & Technology cluster of the University of Twente in the Netherlands (www.membrane.nl).

Your profile

You are a highly motivated and enthusiastic researcher (F/M), having a MSc degree in chemical engineering or a closely related subject area. We encourage strong communication skill and interest in sharing knowledge, presenting at conferences and (project) meetings, and publication in peer-reviewed journals. Creativity, with a hands-on mentality, are valued highly. Proficiency in English is required, both spoken and written.
