The IDS group belongs to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science, whereas the XUV Optics group is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The IDS group studies electronic and electromechanical components. It develops new concepts for nanoscale materials, devices and systems using nano- and microfabrication techniques. One of the group’s research directions is making and analyzing (thin) films of new insulators, metals and semiconductors of few-nanometer thickness for possible application in integrated circuits. The XUV Optics group focuses on multilayer reflective optics based on complex, nanoscale layered systems. The group carries out advanced thin film research involving atomic scale physics and chemistry topics, and possesses key expertise in fabrication of multilayer EUV optics by various thin-film deposition techniques.
Both groups contribute to the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology and have strong track records in knowledge transfers to the semiconductor industry. MESA+ is the largest research institute of the University of Twente. The institute trains graduate students and PhD-students and conducts research in the fields of nanotechnology, microsystems, materials science and microelectronics. Unique of MESA+ is its multidisciplinary composition.

The Integrated Devices and Systems (IDS) and XUV Optics groups at the University of Twente have a vacancy for a Ph.D. student in the project “A thin-film physics toolbox for XUV optics” or in short “X-tools”. This project aims to investigate novel materials made by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) for applications in Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) optics. The investigations involve the use of ALD equipment, the in-depth study of thin films deposition processes and finally the film characterization. The challenge is to create new, competitive thin films of isolating nature for application in future EUV lithography.
The project is financed within the so-called “NWO Natuurkunde Industrial Partnership Programme”. You will carry out the research at the University of Twente in Enschede, The Netherlands with guidance from two supervisors (Dr. Alexey Kovalgin and Prof. Dr. Jurriaan Schmitz) as well as support from a senior engineer. Various teaching activities may take up to 20% of your time.
- You are highly motivated and an enthusiastic researcher (F/M).
- You have a MSc degree in electrical engineering, nanotechnology, inorganic chemistry, applied physics or a related topic, with excellent theoretical and experimental skills.
- You have shown affinity with materials science.
- You have good team spirit and like to work in an internationally oriented environment.
- You are fluent in English.

You will be appointed on a fulltime position for four years, with a qualifier in the first year, within a very stimulating scientific environment. The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) comprises three disciplines that shape Information and Communication Technology. ICT is more than communication. In almost every product we use mathematics, electronics and computer technology and ICT now contributes to all of societies' activities.
