Job description

The Integrated Devices and Systems (IDS) group at the University of Twente has a vacancy for a Ph.D. student in the project “High power efficiency with pure boron in semiconductor devices” or in short “B-Power”. This project aims to research a performance-enhancer for power chips: a novel 2-D material composed of a pure-boron layer (PureB) that promises to reduce the power consumption of power devices in various semiconductor material systems (e.g., silicon, gallium-nitride). The candidate will address modelling and simulation aspects of these new devices and perform extended electrical characterization. 

The challenge is to develop and incorporate a physics-based model needed to describe the physical properties of PureB in power devices, to (co-)develop novel power devices, and to perform electrical analysis of the envisaged devices in close collaboration with other project members and the industry.

The project is financed by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) in the domain Applied and Engineering Sciences (TTW) via the HTSM call (High Tech Systems and Materials). You will carry out the research at the University in Enschede, The Netherlands, and several supervisors (Dr. Ray Hueting, Prof. Dr. Lis Nanver) will give guidance. In this project you will collaborate with other project members who will realize experimental PureB layers and power devices. In addition, this project is carried out in collaboration with a wide span of companies and institutes such as EpiGaN, Tempress, ABB, University of Stuttgart, Aalborg University, and University of Warwick. Teaching activities will take 10%-20% of your time.

Your profile

  • You are highly motivated and an enthusiastic researcher (F/M).
  • You have a MSc degree in electrical engineering, nanotechnology, applied physics or a related topic, with excellent theoretical, programming and experimental skills.
  • You have shown affinity with semiconductors and modelling.
  • You have good team spirit and like to work in an internationally oriented environment.
  • You are fluent in English.

You will be appointed on a fulltime position for four years, with a qualifier in the first year, within a very stimulating scientific environment.
