The Mathematics and Computer Science departments at the University of Twente (UT) are looking for a developer to support the digital testing in both programmes.
Digital testing is an innovative and challenging field, with a great amount of potential for both staff and students. Challenges are:
- Firstly, to enable tests to be taken digitally in the first place. This means that assignments and questions of many types can be easily created and offered in a digital form by examiners, and answers can be easily entered by students, as well efficiently processed and reliably and transparently graded. Digital tests offer types of assignments and questions that are not feasible in a traditional written tests; these possibilities need to be investigated and made available.
- Secondly, to enable tests to be assessed automatically, with appropriate, relevant feedback. The potential for automatic assessment is starting to be unleashed, but is as yet very much a developing field of study.
- Thirdly, to help in the adoption of digital tests. It is not enough to show that digital tests and automatic assessment are possible: teachers need to be aided in creating them in order to appreciate the possibilities and embrace their potential.You will work in a vibrant and dynamic team consisting of e-learning specialists, educational advisors, software administrators, programme management, and lecturers of Mathematics and Computer Science.
The responsibilities include:
- Develop new types of questions and assignments that can integrated in a digital test and measure the abilities of students in a fair, transparent, reliable and valid way
- With the help of educational specialists, aid the teachers in actually developing concrete questions and assignments of such types and building a “question bank”
- With teachers and researchers in the field, study and enable the automatic assessment and automatic feedback for a growing set of question types
- Along with the software administrator, manage the administration and organisation that is involved with setting up and running digital tests
- You have an MSc degree in Mathematics or Computer Science, with a strong affinity for both fields.
- You have expertise in Educational Science, and where needed, can show initiative to increase expertise through self-regulated learning.
- Ideally, you are proficient in tools such as Integrated Development Environments and algebra packages such as Mathematica or Maple and have working knowledge of LaTeX
