High-Tech Systems & Materials

This page is intended for current UT students who choose the specialisation High-Tech Systems & Materials or are thinking about choosing this specialisation.

Themes

The specialisation High-Tech Systems and Materials (HTSM) is your best option if you want to learn how to put the properties and behaviour of single and interacting materials and systems to maximum industrial use. The specialisation focusses on the performance of products, the production of these products and the materials used for these products or in these production methods. These topics are often strongly dependent on each other. The specialisation covers four separate themes:

More details of these themes are discussed in more detail in the HTSM Brochure and covered by the different research groups involved in this specialisation.

To get an insight into what studying HTSM is like, you can watch the Lab-visit Interviews with students of this specialisation.

HTSM PROGRAMME COURSES

The High-Tech Systems and Materials specialisation is a two-year master’s programme. In the first year, you choose 12 courses of which at least 6 courses are core specialisation courses. On top of that you are free to choose elective courses. The best course package is a personal package, which can be discussed with the department portfolio manager education dr.ir. R. Loendersloot.

The core specialisation courses for HTSM are:

A complete overview of all offered courses and those that are suggested as electives can be found in the course overview, which contains links to the Osiris Course catalogue with more information about the courses. Please note that changes can be made in the course overview; the information, including the timing of the course, in Osiris is leading.

When you have made a decision of what courses to take you need to fill in the course registration form and e-mail this to et-ms3-education@utwente.nl.

Whenever you want to make changes to your course package, you need to fill in the changed course list form, as this has to be officially processed in Osiris.

Always make sure to (digitally) sign and date the forms before sending them to us.

HTSM INTERNSHIP

During the second year of the master programme, you perform an internship (15EC) in industry or at a research institute. This can be either in The Netherlands or abroad. The internship is an educational activity specifically aimed at giving students the opportunity to become acquainted with one particular company or institute and experience what it is like to be working in a company setting as part of a team of professionals. After the internship, you hand in a report containing a content-related report of the internship and a reflection on learning experiences gained during the internship. More information can be found on the CANVAS Internship site. Here you can find internship assignments and information on how to register for your internship in Mobility Online. For internship-related questions e-mail internship-me@utwente.nl.

HTSM MASTER THESIS

After you have finished all your courses you can start your MSc assignment. The MSc assignments can be found on the HTSM CANVAS page to which you will be added after registering your course list. These assignments are suitable and of sufficient quality in terms of content and supervision. Please notice it is not allowed to find an assignment yourself. If you are interested in a specific external assignment, contact the University of Twente supervisor, who will set up further contact with the company or institute. Do not hesitate to ask questions about assignments to the mentioned University of Twente contact persons.

Examples of previous Master thesis assignments carried out by students can be found in the HTSM brochure and in the following videos:

Example of Master thesis assignment

Mathieu Naus worked on his thesis at TPRC, the Thermoplastic Composites Research Center.

Example of Master thesis assignment
