In a packed Amphitheatre on campus, Janneke Alers was announced as the University of Twente’s Teacher of the Year 2025. After three mini-lectures from the finalists, Alers ultimately won over the jury and the audience. The Teacher of the Year Award was the closing session of the Week of Education 2025.
Third time’s the charm
This wasn’t Alers’ first time on the stage. She previously made it to the finals in 2013 and 2016. But this year, she finally claimed the title. Nominated by the study association Paradoks, she delivered a presentation on cell biology, explaining how and why we grow cells in the lab, different types of cells, and the importance of working in sterile environments. Her message was simple: students should learn about cell cultivation early in their studies.
AI in the classroom
Following Alers was Tom van Dijk, nominated by Inter-Actief. His lecture focused on generative AI, specifically large language models like ChatGPT, and how these technologies are shaping the future of education. He walked the audience through different models and highlighted both the opportunities and challenges of using AI in the classroom.
Game theory, maths, and a bit of ‘Wie is de Mol?’
Last up was Jasper de Jong, nominated by Abacus. He combined mathematics with humour and creativity, drawing from his YouTube series Mollematica to create a unique "dating game" that introduced game theory and the Nash equilibrium. While the lecture was about math, it was clear the audience was just as intrigued by his side project inspired by Wie is de Mol?, which prompted plenty of questions afterwards.
Voting
After the final presentation, it was time for the vote. In a Robinson-style process, everyone in the audience got to cast a ballot for their favourite finalist. The jury then withdrew to make their decision. When the votes were in and the results revealed, Janneke Alers’ name appeared on the big screen; this time, as the winner.
Unlike previous years, there was no €2,500 cash prize. Instead, Alers received a trophy and the official recognition as UT’s Teacher of the Year.
