This research project is part of a larger STW program, entitled: "All-Risk, implementation of new risk standards in the Dutch flood protection program". This program was initiated after the adoption of a new probabilistic risk approach for the management of the Dutch flood defense system. Several universities (TU, WU, UT, UU and RU), research institutes (NIOZ/RU and Unesco-IHE) and user groups are involved. The presence of a representative of the Dutch flood protection program guarantees the uptake of the attained knowledge in future flood protection programs.
The PhD research focusses on the dynamic hydraulic loads on the Dutch river system. A main interest lies in the uncertainties of the (modelled) water levels. Along with the new risk-based approach it was decided to take such uncertainties into account more explicitly. However, some scientific insight is missing. This research aims to quantify river water levels for various sources of uncertainties. Dominant sources are for instance hydraulic roughness uncertainty, statistical uncertainties and uncertainty with regard to the distribution of discharge at bifurcation points.
