project description

The Smart Supercooled PCM Heat Battery for Long-term Storage (SMARTHEAT) project, part of TKI Urban Energy, developed an innovative thermal storage solution using supercooled phase change materials (PCMs). This technology enables long-term heat storage by stabilizing PCMs in a metastable supercooled state, bridging seasonal energy gaps. A key achievement was the creation of GELSAT, a patented PCM technology that enhances stability and efficiency, allowing controlled release of stored thermal energy. GELSAT integrates seamlessly into heat batteries for district heating networks and industrial applications, storing excess heat from renewables or waste heat during low-demand periods for use during peak demand.

Successfully completed, SMARTHEAT demonstrates scalable, cost-effective solutions to reduce fossil fuel reliance and carbon emissions, promoting sustainable urban energy systems. The project's innovations support the transition to low-carbon cities while improving energy efficiency. For more details, refer to the final report.
