UT module wins ECIU Award for innovative education

The module ‘Smart ways to make smart cities smarter’ has won the ECIU Team Award for Innovation in Teaching and Learning.

The ECIU Team Award is given out every year by the ECIU (European Consortium of Innovative Universities) in order to recognize teaching and learning innovations of teams from the ECIU member institutions.

HTHT minor
‘Smart ways to make smart cities smarter’ is an HTHT minor, led by Léon Olde Scholtenhuis from the faculty of Engineering Technology. The UT minor was selected as the winner out of seven candidates. ‘We center our learning around real-life projects in a very interdisciplinary domain,’ says Olde Scholtenhuis. ‘Besides the use of new technologies in our teaching, we also let students experience how new concepts and technologies influence the daily work practices of future city engineers.”

Different approach
The module covers the popular theme of Smart Cities in a slightly different way than others do. ‘We integrate civil engineering, geophysics, robotics under one umbrella of smart city engineering,’ continues Olde Scholtenhuis. ‘Our addition to the innovative project-led education (Twents Onderwijs Model) is that we include various real-life projects in our module, use technologies for learning and testing, and have frequent peer- and student evaluations to keep the module innovative and relevant.’
