Asset Management & Maintenance Engineering

General Information

The chair of Asset Management & Maintenance Engineering (AMME) focuses on advancing cross-functional collaboration and knowledge integration through systems-level perspectives to enable informed and participatory decision-making at strategic and tactical levels in the maintenance and lifecycle management of physical assets; e.g. trains, infrastructures, aircrafts, electrical substations, locks, and similar capital-intensive assets. These competences are developed and applied in close collaboration with long-term industry partners across railways, energy, and public asset owners ensuring that research remains grounded in real operational challenges. This is reflected in the following core competences:

Maintenance Engineering & Management

  • Develop and continuously improve Maintenance Concepts and Plans by applying reliability- and risk-based approaches (RAMS, RCM, FMEA/FMECA, TSM) to enhance asset performance, availability, and resilience.
  • Design Assets for Maintainability by integrating design for maintenance principles, human factors, modularity, accessibility, robotics and lifecycle considerations to enhance reliability, maintainability, and operational support.

Smart Maintenance

  • Develop Asset Information Strategies to enable data-driven decision-making (condition-based and predictive maintenance) by integrating processes, resources, competences, and technologies (e.g. Information Technology and Operational Technology convergence), while addressing the human and organizational dimensions of this technological migration.
  • Enable Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) approaches by integrating health monitoring, data analytics, and explainable AI to predict failures, estimate remaining useful life, and support maintenance planning and decision-making.

Sustainable Asset Management

  • Enable Strategic Decision-Making by integrating lifecycle planning, multidisciplinary systems thinking, criticality analysis, stakeholder alignment, organizational learning, lifecycle costing, and multi-criteria decision analysis to support value-based decisions.
  • Develop Lifecycle Sustainability Performance for financial, environmental, and social impact by applying Life Cycle Engineering principles, lifetime impact, circularity theory, bio-based principles, and long-term socio-technical scenario thinking.

The AMME chair is an active part of several collaborations with industry and academia. Together with our partners, we work together on research, education, and professional development in the Asset Management and Maintenance Engineering field.

Companies interested in research or professional education with the chair of Asset Management and Maintenance Engineering are encouraged to contact the chair:

Education

The AMME chair offers a wide range of educational courses and activities for master students, EngD students, PhD candidates, and industry professionals.

The Maintenance Engineering & Operations (MEO) specialisation offers various maintenance-oriented courses, capita selecta, and master assignments, offered by a unique collaboration of maintenance-focused chairs. This allows our Mechanical Engineering students to develop relevant expertise and industry expertise over the course of their 2-year master's.

Our chair offers master courses on Maintenance Engineering & Management, Design-for-Maintenance, and Frontiers-in-Maintenance, which are available for students of Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering, and Industrial Engineering & Management.

AMME also provides multiple Lifelong Learning (LLL) activities, offering high-quality education tailored towards professionals who already have professional experience in the maintenance field. Activities involve the Masterclass Asset Management & Maintenance Engineering, Masterclass Risk Management, and NS Accelerate.
