Our mission
The main mission of the Transport Engineering and Management group is to boost smart mobility solutions by delivering scientific knowledge for real-life solutions that contribute to socially inclusive, economically viable, sustainable and resilient cities and regions. Examples are connecting travellers by latest technology in ICT, connecting stakeholders, connecting vehicles, or vehicles and roadside traffic management systems, connecting land use and transport and connecting transport modes. The focus lies on monitoring, analyses and optimization of transport networks and of individual travel and driver behaviour. Individual behaviour is monitored and altered using state of the art ICT technology. The approach that is taken is multi-disciplinary and multi-objective, justified by the multi-facetted nature that sustainability has.
All research at TEM within the University of Twente is part of the Digital Society Institute. On a national level it is part of the Dutch research school for Transport and Logistics (Trail). At the international level, TEM has a joint PhD degree between the University of Twente and the University of Sao Paulo.
TEM comprises two research chairs:
Transport Engineering – this research group focuses on multi-objective analysis and optimization of transport systems
Transport Planning – this research group focuses on multidisciplinary research on the interactions between land use, transport and technological innovations. Research theme’s include the dynamics in travel behaviour, interactions between land use and transport, the societal impacts of urban mobility (including air pollution, traffic safety, equity) and emerging forms of mobility such as shared mobility, Mobility-as-a-Service platforms, and mobility hubs. The research focuses on applied, quantitative and policy relevant research, using empirical, modelling and experimental approaches.
