This PhD project, funded by Rijkswaterstaat and VBW as part of the Asfaltimpuls initiative, examines the implementation of sustainable innovations in the Dutch asphalt paving sector. This research is driven by the urgent need to transition toward sustainable practices in road infrastructure, aligning with societal demands and environmental imperatives. Despite efforts to promote sustainability, the sector faces persistent lock-ins, as promising innovations often stall due to systemic barriers. Adopting a socio-technical systems perspective, my work explores the causal dynamics shaping the implementation of sustainable innovations. The findings will provide actionable insights and guidelines for stakeholders, addressing systemic barriers and facilitating more effective and collaborative pathways toward implementing sustainable innovations.
