Advancing smart mobility solutions for cyclists by cycling innovations (2023-3)

Assignment no: 2023-3

Start of the project: ASAP

Required course(s)/ skills: -

Involved organisation(s): UT-ET-CEM-TP; Mobycon

Smart mobility applications were originally focused on cars, but they are now playing an increasingly crucial role in other transportation modes, including bicycles. Notable examples include smart traffic lights that prioritize cyclists in specific situations, innovative bicycle parking solutions, sensors that gather various environmental data, and our risk analysis tool, MicroTraffic. Our aim is to establish a prominent position in the realm of bicycle innovations. Over the past 4 years, we have actively participated in BITS, a European collaborative project that involved conducting 30 pilots across different countries, focusing on bicycles and intelligent transport systems (ITS). To expand our expertise in the field of bicycle innovations, we are seeking an intern/graduate who can further develop specific bicycle-related projects. This individual will contribute to our ongoing efforts in advancing smart mobility solutions for cyclists.

Research objective

We invite you to collaborate on further developing a specific bicycle innovation for us, with the objective of preparing an actual pilot. Through consultation, we will define the nature of the innovation and establish the ultimate goal. This could entail conducting a pilot with a customer or participating in a bicycle innovation challenge. Alternatively, we welcome the opportunity to enhance an existing technology and explore its applications. For instance, our smart cameras can currently map near-accidents, and our stress-measuring sensors provide insights into how people feel while cycling. Additionally, we seek your support in the MegaBITS project. MegaBITS, a sequel to BITS, is a European collaborative endeavor in which leading cycling cities develop and implement cutting-edge cycling innovations, spanning from Copenhagen to Zwolle and from Antwerp to Hamburg.
