Transport Studies group

The Transport Studies Group (TSG) aims to conduct high-quality research and education in the area of passenger transport and logistics.

We closely collaborate with industry, knowledge institutes and governments. Our research focuses on interactions between smart mobility and digitalisation, transport infrastructure, land-use and behavior, and its societal impacts (including equity, safety, climate). We take an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspective on transport, and collaborate with researchers in the Netherlands and abroad from various disciplines (including industrial engineering, human factors, computer science, geography, urban planning, healthcare technology and operations).  We are one of the research groups in the Digital Society Institute of the UT, and a member of the national research school TRAIL. At the international level, we have a joint PhD degree between the University of Twente and the University of Sao Paulo.

Specific areas of research
  • Intelligent transport systems and management
  • Geospatial analysis of transport systems
  • Transport accessibility and spatial equity
  • Cycling and shared micromobility
  • Integration of transport, digital and physical healthcare
  • Public transport demand and operations
  • Resilience and vulnerability of transport systems
  • Sustainability and the environment
  • Road Safety
  • Mission

Our mission is to boost smart mobility solutions by delivering scientific knowledge for real-life solutions that contribute to socially inclusive, economically viable, sustainable and resilient cities and regions. Examples are connecting travellers by latest technology in ICT, connecting stakeholders, connecting vehicles, or vehicles and roadside traffic management systems, connecting land use and transport and connecting transport modes. The focus lies on monitoring, analyses and optimization of transport networks and of individual travel and driver behaviour. Individual behaviour is monitored and altered using state of the art ICT technology. The approach that is taken is multi-disciplinary and multi-objective, justified by the multi-facetted nature that sustainability has.

Education

The Transport Studies Group provides the Transport Engineering courses in the Bachelor's program Civil Engineering and a full Master track Traffic Engineering & Management within the Master's program Civil Engineering and Management.

A Bachelor thesis in the area of Transport Engineering and Management and a Master thesis, as part of the Master track can be conducted under supervision of the TS group. If you need more information about the bachelor you can contract:
