27-02-2025: Symposium and PhD defence Changqing Lu
Prior to the PhD defence by Changqing Lu on the 27th of February, 2025, of the thesis “Statistical and machine learning contributions to spatial and spatio-temporal point process modelling, with an application to Dutch fire risk prediction”, there will be a symposium with both national and international speakers. Talks will be given by Rémi Bardenet (University of Lille), Geurt Jongbloed (Delft University of Technology), Rasmus Waagepetersen (Aalborg University) and Ron de Wit (Twente Fire Brigade).

10-06-2022: ISMIRT workshop on Urban Traffic Management and control
On Friday 10 June, University of Twente, Technical Eindhoven University and University of Amsterdam organize, in collaboration with ARS Traffic & Transport Technology, a one-day workshop on Urban Traffic Management and Control, for which you are cordially invited. The aim of this workshop is to fill the gap between researchers and practitioners. The mini-symposium is free of charge but registration is appreciated.

On June 21, Anne Buijsrogge will defend her thesis "Rare Event Simulation for Non-Markovian Tandem Queues". Prior to this public defence a symposium on “Rare events, simulation and queueing networks”, was held at the University of Twente, Ravelijn 2501.

On January 25, 2019, Corine Laan defended her thesis "Games for the optimal deployment of security forces". Prior to this public defence a symposium was held on "Games and Security".
20-09-2018: Mini-Symposium on Performance Analysis of Markov Processes
On September 20, 2018, Xinwei Bai succesfully defended her PhD thesis "Performance Bounds for Random Walks in the Positive Orthant" at 14:30. Prior to this ceremony, there was mini-symposium on Performance Analysis of Markov Processes.

12-04-2018: Seventh Van der Meulen Seminar
The Seventh Van der Meulen Seminar (an IEEE Benelux Chapter on Information Theory activity) will be held at the University of Twente on Thursday April 12, 2018. The theme of the seminar is “Advances in Wireless Networks”, and it will take place in conjunction with Berksan Serbetci’s defense of his PhD thesis “Caching and Network Coding for Smart Radio Access”.
13/14/15-12-2017: Healthcare Logistics: Balancing between Practice and Theory
On December 14th and 15th, Sem van Brummelen and Gréanne Leeftink successfully defended there theses. On these occasions, the three day symposium "Healthcare Logistics: Balancing between Practice and Theory" was organized with international speakers. More information on the symposium, and the preceding seminar on December 13nd, can be found here.
21-07-2017: Healthcare Operations Research Summer School, University of Twente, July 21 – 25, 2017
We are excited to announce a special summer school on Healthcare Operations Research this summer at the University of Twente, the Netherlands! The event targets PhD students working on OR applications focused on improving healthcare. Participants will learn state-of-the-art OR techniques taught by renowned international professors, learn about how to successfully engage with the healthcare practice, and meet other PhD students from around the world. The program includes a wide variety of components including technical lectures, tutorials, inspiring seminars, interactive activities and a design competition of a serious game that demonstrates a healthcare OR/OM concept to healthcare professionals. The total workload of the summer school is 2 European Credits (2 ECs = 56 hours), consisting of preparation and contact hours.

On May 22, 2015, Yanting Chen defended her PhD thesis "Random Walks in the Quarter-Plane: Invariant Measures and Performance Bounds". Prior to this ceremony, a seminar was held.
20-04-2015 -- 24-04-2015: European School of Information Theory
The European School of Information Theory (ESIT) is an annual educational event, organized by the IEEE Information Theory Society, for graduate students from institutes throughout Europe and beyond. The objective of the school is to provide the students with the opportunity (i) to learn from distinguished lecturers by attending long-format (3 hour) tutorials, (ii) to present their own work to obtain feedback and to start up collaborations, (iii) to hear about applications of information theory in industry, and (iv) to participate in a stimulating and inviting forum of scientists.
21-11-2013: Symposium "CHOIR in practice"
The symposium starts the 21st of November with the public PhD thesis defenses of Theresia van Essen and Peter Hulshof. The program on the 22nd of November includes presentations by the following guests: Prof. dr. Stefan Nickel (Karlsruhe University of Technology), Prof. dr. Frits van Merode (Maastricht University), Prof. dr. Greet Vanden Berghe (KAHO Sint-Lieven), Prof. dr. Brigitte Werners (Ruhr University Bochum), Prof. dr. Paul Harper (Cardiff University), and dr. ir. Erwin Hans (University of Twente). The speakers will present their research on healthcare optimization applications and will focus on the implementation of these results in practice. The symposium will conclude with the public PhD thesis defense of Egbert van der Veen.

On January 27th, 2012, Maartje Zonderland defended her PhD thesis "Curing the Queue". Prior to this ceremony, a seminar named “Curing the Queue: Bridging the Gap between Theory and Practice” was held. This seminar is organized the Center for Healthcare Operations Improvement and Research.

The Industrial Engineering programme (research and education) of the University of Twente organizes its first symposium on theory and applications in Industrial Engineering on November 27, 2009. The programme is organized around the four key areas of the Industrial Engineering programme: manufacturing & logistics, healthcare, financial engineering and traffic & mobility.
