A reliable and affordable energy supply is essential for businesses. With GEMS, we help business parks optimize their energy consumption and make better use of locally generated renewable energy. This enables companies to reduce costs while contributing to a stable electricity grid.

Objective and approach

GEMS develops and tests innovative energy management systems (EMS) on business parks in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France and Ireland. An EMS allows companies to better align their energy consumption with renewable generation and to distribute energy more intelligently within the park.

Benefits for businesses:

  • Smart energy use – reducing consumption peaks and preventing waste;
  • Lower energy costs – through more efficient use and more stable energy prices;
  • Less grid congestion – optimal use of locally generated energy;
  • Stronger competitive position – through sustainable and future-proof operations.

The aim of GEMS is to strengthen European competitiveness by enabling green growth. Companies can become more sustainable while continuing to grow without weakening their economic position.

Partner organisations and pilots

A total of 13 partners from five countries (Netherlands, Belgium, France, Ireland and Germany) are involved, including universities, technical experts and regional development agencies. In Germany, for example, a pilot is being carried out at the FiDT start-up campus in Kassel and in the Netherlands, Laarberg is transforming into a Smart Energy Hub. In addition, digital twins are being developed: virtual models of business parks that allow companies to simulate and optimize their energy infrastructure.

Practical energy management

The solutions developed within GEMS can be easily transferred to other business parks. Through a training programme, entrepreneurs and park managers learn how to get started with energy management themselves. In this way, we share knowledge, stimulate innovation and accelerate the sustainability transition of business parks across North-West Europe.
