ENW-KLEIN grant for Matthias Schlottbom

Recently, Matthias Schlottbom, assistant professor in the group Mathematics of Computational Science (MACS, faculty of EEMCS), received an NWO ENW-KLEIN-1 grant for a research project on high-frequency electromagnetic radiation, which will be carried out by a prospective PhD student under his supervision.

PROJECT SUMMARY

High-frequency electromagnetic radiation is at the heart of several high-tech applications, including energy efficient generation of white light, medical imaging techniques such as quantitative photoacoustic tomography, and tumor treatment using radiation therapy. Computational models for such applications suffer from the curse of dimensionality, which describes the phenomenon that the dimensionality of the underlying partial differential equations enter the computational complexity exponentially.

The essential idea of low-rank tensor product methods, which will be developed in this project, is that large data sets, such as solutions of high-dimensional partial differential equations, can often be accurately described with relatively little information. The calculations can then be significantly accelerated by using only the relevant information.

KLEIN GRANTS

KLEIN grants are intended for realising curiosity-driven, fundamental research of high quality and/or scientific urgency. The KLEIN grant offers researchers the possibility to elaborate creative and risky ideas and to realise scientific innovations that can form the basis for the research themes of the future. There are three categories of KLEIN grants: KLEIN-1 (1 scientific position), KLEIN-2 (2 scientific positions in collaboration) and KLEIN-0 (investments) that are assessed in competition with each other.
