It is with great sadness that the EEMCS faculty at the University of Twente has learned of the passing of Karel de Jonge, a deeply respected UT pioneer. Karel passed away on Saturday, July 5th, at the age of 88.
Karel began his career at the University of Twente in 1964 as a scientific staff member in the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, back when the university was still known as Technische Hogeschool Twente. He deliberately chose a path in education and governance. A decision that was unconventional at the time, but one he followed with unwavering dedication.
Over the years, Karel held numerous educational roles: dean of education, mentor, and academic advisor. In the 1980s, he transitioned to the Faculty of Computer Science, where he played a key role in shaping the computer science programme. He also served as programme director during the founding of the study association Inter-Actief in 1981, of which he later became an honorary member. Well into his retirement, Karel remained closely connected to the association, joining the board for an annual dinner each year.
Beyond education, Karel held many influential positions within the university, including as a long-time member of the University Council representing the Democraten Drienerlo party. In 1972, he was appointed to the Executive Board, which at the time included members elected by the council. His focus was on education and student affairs. His dedication extended beyond his formal roles. Even after retirement, he remained active in the UT community, notably as chair of the GEWIS senior association. In recognition of his many contributions, Karel was awarded the royal honour of Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau in the 1990s.
We remember Karel as a passionate, devoted, and kind-hearted colleague who inspired generations of students and staff. His legacy lives on within our faculty and throughout the University of Twente.
Our thoughts are with his loved ones.
