Exchange with Nicole Megow's Combinatorial Optimization and Logistics group at University of Bremen

Our Energy Group colleague Leoni Winschermann just started a 4-month research visit at the Combinatorial Optimization and Logistics group at University of Bremen. Nicole Megow (chair) and her colleagues specialize in the analysis of computationally difficult discrete algorithmic problems, with and without uncertainty in the algorithm input.

Many of the on-going research projects of the Energy Group incorporate aspects of uncertainty. The SmoothEMS met GridShield project, for example, considers an office parking lot with on-site electric vehicle charging infrastructure. However, even after their arrival, the departure times and energy demand of electric vehicles is not known to the system. Furthermore, while the on-site PV installation generates sustainable energy, its power profile is not known beforehand, making hard to match the vehicle charging schedule to the locally produced energy. Especially on cloudy days, the available power fluctuates heavily.

The goal of the visit is an active knowledge exchange that brings together the Energy Group's application-driven research interests with Nicole's group's expertise on scheduling under uncertainty. Thank you to Nicole and colleagues for the warm welcome. We are looking forward to the coming months.
