Background:

The availability of data capturing technology and the use of this captured data is expanding in the world of football. Presently, almost everything can be measured. For example, tracking data: the position in the field of each player can be measured with high frequencies (25 per second). With all the positions of the players, we can calculate things like the amount of distance covered during matches.  Furthermore, event data is measured during every game; every pass or ‘action’ from any player is captured. These two data sources are the most common in football, however, one can think of many more: physiological sensors, test results, player wellness questionnaires, scouting data, medical information, etc.

An obstacle for being able to use and exploit this data, is that every data source comes with their own provider and has their independent (online) database. Analytics on each separately has limited use, for example, if you want to analyse counterpressure during a football match, you need both the positional data and the data of the passes/ball transitions. For a sustainable and effective use of this data, FC Twente needs a sports data warehouse that stores and manages the raw source data as well as combined pre-processed data sets. In this way, practical questions can be effectively answered covering the entire data availability. Moreover, it can be a basis for FC Twente’s data capabilities to grow.

Assignment:

Design and development of a sports data warehouse at FC Twente.
