University of Twente’s Data Management and Biometrics Group Visits Paderborn Computer Science Institute

The University of Twente’s Data Management and Biometrics Group (DMB) visited the Computer Science Institute at the University of Paderborn on October 16–17, fostering new connections and insights into data science, artificial intelligence, and biometrics.
The two-day event, hosted at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute in Paderborn, provided a blend of academic presentations, research discussions, and social events designed to encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing between the institutions.
October 16: Scientific Presentations and Discussions
The first day kicked off with a series of scientific sessions at Freiraum on the ground floor of the Heinz Nixdorf Institute. Maurice van Keulen from the University of Twente opened with an overview of the DMB Group’s research activities and priorities, providing insights into their latest advancements in data management and biometrics. Following this, Axel Ngonga from Paderborn introduced the Data Science Group at Paderborn, highlighting research initiatives that align with the DMB group's work.
The scientific portion continued with the MALEO Group’s presentation by Heike Trautmann and her team, shedding light on their research focus areas in machine learning and optimization, adding to the collaborative potential between the groups.
After a break for lunch, participants enjoyed a walk around Padersee, taking advantage of the mild autumn weather before returning to the venue for a series of in-depth talks. Estefania Talavera Martínez from the University of Twente presented her research for which she won a prestigeous VENI award, followed by presentations from two of Paderborn’s junior research groups. Stefan Heindorf discussed recent developments in the Data Science Junior Research Group, while Rouqaiah Al-Refai presented an overview of the Responsible AI for Biometrics Junior Research Group.
Stefan Sauer wrapped up the academic portion with a presentation on the Software Innovation Campus Paderborn (SICP), showcasing the campus’s latest innovations in software development and its role in fostering industry partnerships and practical applications for AI and data science.
After a day of insightful talks and discussions, the participants were invited to a dinner at Hotel Aspethera, providing an informal setting for further networking and collaboration.
October 17: Exploring Local Innovations
The following morning focused on socializing and exploring local technological heritage. The delegation visited the Heinz Nixdorf Computer Museum, offering a unique opportunity to delve into the history of computing and explore exhibits that showcase the technological progress from early computing devices to modern-day innovations.
