A Warm Welcome to the New Academic Year
As we entered the new academic year last month, the Interaction Lab warmly welcomed both new and returning Creative Technology (CreaTe) and Interaction Technology (I-Tech) students, along with our dedicated researchers and lecturers. September was a busy month, filled with fresh energy as students began exploring the lab's projects and facilities.
Demo Day and BBQ: Exploring Innovation and Building Connections
In September, the Interaction Lab hosted the annual Demo Day, where first-year I-Tech students were introduced to the lab and its ongoing research. Students had the chance to see and interact with a wide range of projects firsthand. Demos included Interactive Sport Technology, Social Robots, Teleoperation, Interactive Drones, Virtual Reality, Serious Games, Speech and Language Technology, and much more..!
Among the many projects was I-Tech student Koen Vogel’s Integrated Interactive Climbing Wall (IICW). The IICW uses LED holds, projection mapping, motion tracking, and directional force sensors to provide an interactive climbing experience, with real-time tracking of movements for applications like performance analysis and gaming. Koen is still looking for bouldering participants for his research, and anyone interested can contact him at k.a.vogel@student.utwente.nl.
The day concluded with a BBQ, giving students, researchers, and staff the opportunity to socialize, discuss the projects, and build connections in a more relaxed setting. It was a great way to welcome everyone and foster a sense of community as we look forward to the academic year ahead.
Hosting the Detox@Home project meeting
The Interaction Lab recently hosted a user committee meeting for the Detox@Home project, bringing together consortium members and stakeholder representatives to align on the project's overarching goals and discuss updates on deliverables and milestones. The session also featured a tour of the lab, showcasing related healthcare research initiatives such as Sense-IT, ECG Family Clinic, Freehabilitation, Council of Coaches, and Spiroplay to inspire collaboration and innovation.
The Detox@Home project aims to provide an alternative to traditional inpatient care by enabling remote monitoring and intervention during the process of detoxification from addictive substances. By allowing patients who suffer from a substance use disorder to detox in the comfort of their own homes, the project seeks to reduce barriers to care and enhance the overall availability of addiction treatment. Detoxing in a familiar environment fosters better coping strategies, as patients learn to navigate everyday triggers and temptations. Central to the initiative is the development of a digital platform that facilitates self-reporting, telemonitoring, and communication with healthcare professionals, ensuring patients receive the necessary support throughout their detox journey.
We are excited to see how the Detox@Home project evolves in the coming years! For further details, please reach out to Huub Lievestro or Randy Klaassen.
New Lab Opening Hours for Equipment Reservations
With the new semester underway, the lab has slightly adjusted its opening hours. The Interaction Lab is now open every weekday between 12:30 and 13:30 for borrowing and returning equipment, as well as technical support. If you need equipment for your research or study projects, you can reserve equipment in advance using our online booking system.
Reflecting on September’s events, we’re excited about the projects and research ahead this year. Stay tuned for more news and updates from the Interaction Lab!
