Terminology Update: From "Activism" to "Being Active"

The Student Union has decided to replace the word "activism" with "being active" or "engagement." These terms better align with what the Student Union aims to convey. The word "activism" often evokes incorrect associations.

At UT, we use the term "activism" to describe students who do engage in activities alongside their studies, such as taking on a board year, leading a committee, or organizing a large event. For the Student Union, this is one of the unique and valuable aspects of the UT.

Why this change?

Outside the UT, however, the word "activism" often gives other associations, such as protesting on barricades or other forms of social resistance. This difference in interpretation can lead to misunderstandings, especially among prospective and international students. The use of the term "activism" may unintentionally create a negative impression and fail to convey the positive message the Student Unions intends.

Communication to Students

The Student Union kindly asks UT staff to incorporate this change in their communication to students, so that we can collectively, as a UT community, convey a clear and welcoming message.

If you have any questions or need further clarification, please feel free to contact the Student Union!
