CONNECTING WORLDS FOR A BETTER FUTURE

Every year in October, Dutch Design Week (DDW) takes place in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. DDW is the biggest design event in Northern Europe, where thousands of designers from all over the globe present their work and ideas. This year, from the 22nd until the 30th of October, University of Twente will take part in lectures, workshops, an exhibition and other activities in three programmes: Transitions by Design UnitedEmbassy of Health and DRIVE festival. Every programme has its own themes and its own manner of showcasing, but they all connect to this year's overarching DDW theme: 'Get Set'.

More than ever, it is important to work together as a society, in order to come up with workable solutions to challenges we are facing now and tomorrow. Valuing others’ experiences and having an open mindset to explore the present, enables us all to define futures collectively.

CLOSE YOUR EYES AND HOLD ON TO YOUR PATH

Who are you today? And when you come to Eindhoven, who do you decide to be? What keeps you up at night? Whether we are academic, working in a corporate business, drafting policies for governments, retired, a parent or a child: we all deal with certain societal challenges. We belong to society, in which science and design play an undeniable part.

OPEN YOUR SENSES AND IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE PRESENT

Our passionate researchers are not afraid to roll up their sleeves if that is what is needed to make impact. This is done through experimenting, learning, inspiring: Cross-faculty and together with governments, companies and citizens. As a result, technologies are generated within the field of health, digitalisation, ‘rurban’ areas and smart materials. Designers give the floor to society’s questions, needs and answers by presenting stories in the form of art, materials and interactive concepts. Their minds open doors to feel what is happening in the world: designers are capable of expressing complex situations in an understandable manner.

UNITE TO DEFINE THE FUTURE THAT IS NOW

When you come to Dutch Design Week, you will be exposed to an exciting commixture of these worlds. Whatever role you partake in, designers and researchers invite YOU to share your own perspective and reflect on the presented challenges and possible solutions. What defines a better future? Why is it important? Who do you need in order to make it happen? And how will we make it become true in the present? We are all in this together!

PARTNERS

Behind the scenes, the UT community of designers, researchers and staff exchanged innovative concepts and combined forces with those of our external partners Embassy of Health, the four Dutch technical universities (4TU's Design United) and ClickNL (Top Consortium of the top sector Creative Industries), getting ready to tackle challenges that may seem impossible at first. Do you think it is time too and would you like to participate in and experience citizen science, planetary health, and solutions thanks to (unexpected) encounters? Come and visit us online or live in Eindhoven at Transitions (Design United), Embassy of Health and DRIVE Festival!
