SPENCER The 3D robot

For the last three years Human Media Interaction has been involved in the SPENCER project, which came to a close with a successful demonstration and evaluation at Schiphol. Of course we’d love to showcase our work, however, with SPENCER being 1.96m. tall, and weighing about 250 kilo’s this quickly turns into a small logistic nightmare. Therefore, and for future research purposes, we ended up with the ultimate solution: 3d printing the robot. After spending a few weekends studying drawings & working with 3d software, the model was finished.

This proved to be the beginning of a new journey into the world of 3d printing. Together with the DesignLab, I investigated the most efficient way of printing the model, which resulted in a few prototypes which were then painted a few times to give the robot the SPENCER looks as well.

The latest model was presented as a small gift to the Minister of Social Affairs and Employment, Lodewijk Asscher.
