Hybrid Worlds Bicycle Counter

For the project of the eight module “Hybrid Worlds” of the Creative Technology programme, we had to create a physical data visualization in teams of 10 to 15 persons.

My team has created the ‘bicycle counter’, which shows the bike activity on the university terrain in time slots of 15 minutes in a bar chart. We created our own data by tracking cyclists at the Pinetumpad (entrance to the city) and at the Oude Drienerloweg (bike road next to the hotel). We used WiFi sensors for communication to the installation.

For every cyclist tracked at one of the measuring locations, one BB gun ball was dropped by a revolver in one of the tubes made of plexiglass. Two bar charts were stacked behind each other which made comparing the two locations easy.

The revolver was positioned above the tubes as a small cart on a rails. It moved every quarter of an hour.

The result could be seen in this two-minute-video: Click here!

Last Friday, we had our demo day in the DesignLab and people were very enthusiastic about our project!
