What can you do here?

students in designlab

Are you a student here at the University of Twente and would like to know what DesignLab offers? Then this page is for you!

In DesignLab, any student is always welcome to drop by & join us and your friends in one of our open spaces, hang out and relax, work in the workshops, or attend one of our events for extra stimulation of the mind. Additionally, both University of Twente staff and students can book various rooms for educational purposes.

WORKSHOPS

There are multiple workshops available at DesignLab. In order to be able to use them, you need to have a safety badge.

Need a safety badge?

You can come to DesignLab every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 13:00 to get a safety tour and receive a safety badge.

  • mWorkshop

    Often used for: project work, prototyping  Before first use: Ask a DreamTeamer for a TeachTeam safety tour (at the desk or designlab@utwente.nl)

    The Equipment:

    • CNC milling machine Isel ICP4030
    • Table saw
    • Radial arm saw
    • Bandsaw
    • Belt sander
    • Hot wire foam cutter
    • Scroll saw
  • eWorkshop

    Often used for: testing, evaluating and improving concepts (e.g. specs of 3D printing & Laser cutting) Before first use: Ask a DreamTeamer for a TeachTeam safety tour (at the desk or designlab@utwente.nl)

    The Equipment:

    • Lasercutter Trotec SP500 max size 1250 mm by 700 mm
    • 3D printers: Ultimaker 2, 2E, 3, 5S, Formlabs Form 3L
    • Sewing machines
    • Adjustable power supply 42V 10A
    • Oscilloscope Siglent SDS 1202CNL+
    • Digital multimeter Fluke 8808A
    • Signal generator Siglent SDG1025
  • dWorkshop

    Often used for: photography, videography, audio recording and digital design

    Equipment: camera gear, video lights, editing workstation, audio recording device, backdrops incl. green screen

  • tWorkshop

    tWorkshop is a textile workspace with many tools and materials required for prototyping textile products and wearable technology.

    The two mannequins can be used for draping and pattern making. Pick a fabric from the fabric storage or bring some of your own, draw out your pattern on the height adjustable cutting table and use the fabric scissors or a rotary cutter to cut out your workpiece.

    There are several sewing machine available for you to put together your prototype:
    - Two basic Pfaff home sewing machines which can be used by anyone
    - a brand new, automated Husqvarna home sewing machine, for which the 30 minute Sewing 1 introduction is required
    - a heavy-duty Juki industrial sewing machine, for which both Sewing 1 and Sewing 2 are required

    Additionally, we provide 30 minute support sessions, if you have specific questions.

    Support is currently provided on Thursday & Friday.

The workshops are open every working day from 9 - 17. During regular opening hours, the workshops are only used for projects that are research or education related.

Maker's night

Do you want to use the laser cutter, 3D printer or other tools and machines for a personal project? Good news: we regularly host a Makers Night to make this possible. 

Join Maker's Night every Tuesday from 17 until 20.
