Articulating the challenge

  • Goal: Getting participants on the same page
  • Duration: 20 mins (depending on the number of participants)

Introduction

Although participants will engage with Responsible Futuring around a specific theme, it is essential that they articulate the challenge they want to address and that they define it together upfront, to ensure they are on the same page.

How it works

  1. When we are talking about challenges (i.e. climate change, digitalisation, health innovation), what do you consider important?
  2. What should be a focus area to address together? Why?
  3. All participants reflect on these questions individually, and then share them with others. At the end of the exercise, they have a definition of a challenge to engage in transdisciplinary collaboration.
Tip(s) for moderator

This is a crucial step while engaging in Responsible Futuring. Even if the challenge seems to be well defined, it is very important to align within the group to ensure that the focus of the session is on issues that all participants feel crucial (even if their motivations and goals to join are different).

Output

A definition of a societal challenge that will be central for the activities with Responsible Futuring.

Next step(s)

Start with a Connect and Relate activity.
