ChallengeLab Twente: Students from educational institutions in Twente contribute to the future of Twente cities!

EnschedeLab continues as ChallengeLab Twente. This name change marks the collaboration between AKI/ArtEZ, ROC van Twente, Saxion, and the University of Twente with the municipality of Enschede, as well as an increasing number of other Twente municipalities, such as Hengelo. This development stems from the Subsidy City Deal Kennis Maken (CDKM) 2023 awarded in May 2023. It means that over the next 3 years, an amount of 500,000 euros can be invested in developing and utilising knowledge and expertise for urban issues.

Get to know the city

ChallengeLab Twente brings together cities in Twente with students, teachers, and researchers by joining forces to solve real issues, such as sustainability. Students from the University of Twente, ROC van Twente, Saxion University of Applied Sciences, and AKI/ArtEZ are challenged to collaborate beyond the boundaries of their institutions to develop innovative solutions. Mixed teams, composed of students with diverse talents, skill sets, and experiences, work on these challenges. ChallengeLab Twente believes that this mix of creative thinkers and makers will produce inspiring and unexpected solutions.

The challenges come directly from Twente, from municipalities, companies, citizens, and social organisations. They are also involved as clients in solving the challenges, creating an interaction: students learn, make valuable contacts, and municipalities, citizens, organisations, and companies receive usable solutions.

"We believe that bringing together and collaborating with students from different educational institutions, with different talents and skills, truly adds value. In the business world, they will also collaborate with people from different backgrounds on projects. ChallengeLab Twente believes that this mix of creative thinkers and makers will produce inspiring and out-of-the-box solutions for issues surrounding circularity and sustainability," says Eric Wolkotte, project leader of ChallengeLab Twente.

Target groups

ChallengeLab Twente focuses on three target groups:

  1. Students: Within their education, students can participate in the challenges organised twice a year. Students bring their talents, skills, experience, and creativity to this collaboration.
  2. Teachers and researchers: Whether as instructors, supervisors, or by sending students, teachers and researchers play a crucial role. They make it possible for the practical issues to fit within the existing subjects and courses of the four educational institutions.
  3. Challenge owners: ChallengeLab Twente contributes to solving issues. These are brought by the challenge owners - companies, municipalities, social organisations, and citizens. They can utilise the diverse and up-to-date knowledge available within the Twente educational institutions through ChallengeLab Twente.

ChallengeLab Twente looks forward to continuing, expanding, and offering innovative solutions to Twente's challenges in collaboration with partners in the region.
