On September 16, twenty participants from diverse sectors such as construction, marketing, and academia gathered at the DesignLab, University of Twente. Their mission? To explore circular innovations in a transdisciplinary workshop from DesignLab Academy using Responsible Futuring.
Kumasi Drinks presented the challenge: Reducing Waste in the Cocoa Chain
Kumasi Drinks, a company focused on reducing food waste in the cocoa supply chain, introduced their challenge. Kumasi Drinks has already made strides with their innovative model of using leftover cocoa fruit to produce a beverage. However, a large portion of the cocoa fruit remains unused. They asked the participants: "How can we encourage the cocoa supply chain to focus on a sustainable future by minimising waste and adding more value?"
A Transdisciplinary Approach to Circular Innovation
Guided by DesignLab researchers and experts Julieta Matos Castaño, Svenja Damberg, and Maartje Huinink, participants navigated the stages of Responsible Futuring. This approach enabled the group to examine the challenge from multiple perspectives and come up with innovative ideas. The diversity among participants brought a wealth of new viewpoints enriching the creative process.
The workshop began with an exploration of the challenge and identification of key players in the cocoa supply chain, from farmers to consumers. Next, participants examined the relationships, conflicts, and synergies among these actors. Through formulating “What-if” scenarios and visualising speculative futures, surprising ideas emerged. These included moving cocoa production to Europe to meet critical consumer demand or retirees working on fields in southern Spain to support production. Finally, they reflected on the potential impact of these ideas in the present.
Participant Enthusiasm and Engagement
Participants were enthusiastic about the diversity of people they collaborated with. The range of perspectives—from academics to representatives of the construction industry and local government—enriched the discussion and led to creative directions. Lars Gierveld, founder of Kumasi Drinks, also left with valuable insights for further exploration. The enthusiasm and engagement of the participants made the workshop an inspiring and successful day.
Responsible Futuring Toolbox
Following the workshop, participants requested more information on the tools used throughout the process. DesignLab offers everyone an open access toolbox that contains tools and tricks for every phase of the approach.
