Lightbulb Chats: Nitrogen Talks

Join us for a unique talk on the sense and nonsense of the Dutch government's nitrogen policy!

Nitrogen is currently one of the most controversial issues in The Netherlands. Due to the so-called 'nitrogen crisis', our government has shut down the construction sector, and intends to halve our livestock and possibly disown farmers by force. This unprecedented policy is seen by some as a pure necessity to protect our nature, while others see it as disproportionate, extremist, and inhumane.

On April 3rd, two of this country’s important people in the field of nitrogen will come and share their perspectives and knowledge: Prof. Dr. Johan Sanders (WUR) and Prof. Dr. Wim de Vries (WUR). With two opposing beliefs about the government’s policy. Joined by Prof. Sanders and Prof. De Vries who will moderate the talk using guiding questions such as: what are the effects of nitrogen on nature? What other factors determine the quality of our nature? How do these relate to the influence of nitrogen?

In addition, political and social questions will be discussed: when and why do we consider an effect a problem? Who is it a problem for? For whom not? What actually is nature? Why doesn’t Germany have a nitrogen crisis? Etc.

In the first half, each speaker will give a general brief on the topic itself so everyone will be on the same page as well as their thoughts. After the break, everyone is invited to share their thoughts and ask questions to the speakers themselves.

Don’t miss out on this thought-provoking event, where you will gain a deeper understanding of what is really going on with nitrogen in our country!
