Citizen science adds an extra dimension by starting the scientific process with the identification of real-life issues that our communities, people and social organizations are facing. From the start, the focus is on positive social impact. These are some projects we have been developing since 2021.

DIGITAL MAPPING WITH DISABLED CITIZENS (DIMDICI)
Citizen science projects need to become more inclusive and engage a broader diversity of citizens in the creation of new knowledge.The core idea of the DiMDiCi project is to engage a group of people with cognitive disabilities in the co-design of an inclusive digital collaborative mapping tool in order to strengthen their participation in the design of walkable and accessible (semi-) public space for all.
Co-Designing an Inclusive Collaborative Mapping Tool with People with Disabilities (CODIMAP)
CoDiMaP aims to engage with two groups of people with disabilities in a co-design process to develop a prototype of an inclusive digital mapping tool for the collaborative design of public spaces. With regard to the inclusive design of public spaces, neither digital collaborative mapping tools exist nor the knowledge of what people with disabilities can contribute to making public space accessible for all.
KEEPING TRACK OF CHANGES TOWARDS HEALTHY-LIVING IN A GREEN URBAN SURINAME
Tropenbos Suriname and the Faculty of Geoinformation Sciences and Earth Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente joined forces to investigate the role of urban green spaces in providing healthy living benefits through citizen-based monitoring to inform and activate stakeholders in Suriname.
CITIZEN SCIENCE NOW (NETWORK TRANSFORM GROW)
Citizen Science Network TransfOrm GroW (NOW) aims to explore potential futures in the broader engagement of citizens in Citizen Science (CS) and identify citizen competencies needed to achieve it. The findings from this research will help develop digital CS capacity-building resources for and with citizens.
COVID-19 AND WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE IN SCHOOLS. IMPLICATIONS, CHALLENGES, SOLUTIONS
The project goals include: understanding of WASH conditions in schools in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic and possible barriers, enablers, and solutions related to the necessary improvement of WASH and safe school reopening. Development of a framework for the safe reopening of schools, with possible replication in other LMICs during the COVID-19 pandemic and for future water-related pandemics.

Integrating Risk Perception and Action to enhance Civil protection-Citizen interaction (RiskPACC) is a Horizon 2020 project, funded within the Security pillar. Increasingly complex and interconnected risks globally highlight the need to enhance individual and collective disaster resilience.

Developing a model to predict tick activity in the Netherlands. This project brings together UT’s expertise in the domains of Sensing, Artificial intelligence and Citizen Science.
CLIMATE-RESILIENT WASH AMONG PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS IN CITIES
Access to climate-resilient clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is a pressing challenge for homeless individuals in cities. The ITC-funded Blue Skies project aims to involve homeless people in research and interventions to bridge this gap. Learn more about their efforts to improve WASH and health outcomes for the homeless.
