Tosti Talks: Healthcare and Pollution

The healthcare sector has a higher carbon footprint than aviation. Mainly due to increased energy consumption and the enormous amount of materials and waste. The OR department at the MST (Medisch Spectrum Twente) will elaborate on this worldwide healthcare challenge.

THE SPEAKER

Laurens van Houten

Laurens van Houte is manager of the surgical department of the hospital Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST) in Enschede, the Netherlands. He started as a scrubnurse, worked for 4 years for the ministry of defense, became in 2010 coordinator of the surgical department and since 2012 works as manager of the surgical department. MST is a top clinical hospital with 15 surgical theatres, where all the usual specialisms including neuro-surgery and cardiac surgery are performed. With over 25 years of experience in surgical healthcare Laurens is well aware of the great sustainability challenges the sector is facing. He is highly driven to help making a change and therefore set himself the target of reducing the carbon-footprint of his surgical department with 5% in 2023, relative to 2022.
