Tosti Talks: Urban Quality of Life

In this presentation, Javier will share a methodical approach for mapping the urban quality of life and examining how people perceive their living conditions. We will discuss the results of various case studies conducted in cities in the Global South and North. Furthermore, we will critically analyse the benefits and challenges of combining multiple sources of knowledge collected through mixed methods.

THE SPEAKER

Javier Martinez

Javier Martinez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Geo-Information Management within the Faculty ITC. He is also the coordinator of the Urban Planning and Management specialisation within the two-year Master's degree in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation. He received his architectural degree from the Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Design at the Rosario National University (UNR) in Argentina and obtained his MSc in Geo-Information for Urban Planning from ITC. He earned his PhD from the Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University for his thesis on "Monitoring Intra-Urban Inequalities with GIS-based Indicators: A Case Study in Rosario, Argentina." Between 1999 and 2001, he worked at the Office of Strategic Planning in Rosario, Argentina, where he designed the city's Urban Indicators System. His research and teaching experience are centred around the application of GIS, mixed methods, and indicators for policy-making, urban poverty, quality-of-life, and intra-urban inequalities. Since 2017, he has been a member of the board of directors of the International Society for Quality of Life Studies (ISQOLS) and is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Community Well-Being (Springer) and Applied Research in Quality of Life (Springer).
