Roberto R. Cruz Martinez – Team Open Access, University of Twente

Beyond 100% open-access publishing: Challenges and opportunities

In 2021, 97% of peer-reviewed articles written by scientists of the University of Twente were published open access. In 2022, the picture at our university remained stable with 95%, whereas other Dutch universities reported similarly positive numbers and trends. While 100% open access seems more realisable than ever, many old challenges and new opportunities emerge. In this opening pitch, Roberto will provide an overview of these, addressing the connection between Open Access and the overarching goal of Open Science.

Jeroen Sondervan – Open Scholarly Communication Programme Leader, NWO & Open Science NL

Open Access: What's next?

To further open access in the Netherlands, there is a need to also look at the qualitative aspects of open access, alongside quantitative ones. In this presentation, Jeroen will emphasise the significance of enriching the national open access agenda by looking at different dimensions of open access. These dimmensions include immediacy, community-driven initiatives, diamond open access, the critical role of open metadata, advancements in open peer review and the adopoption of open licences. Lastly, the importance of making open science publishing prachtices recognised and rewarded will be underscored.

Michiel de Jong – Open Education Coordinator, TU Delft

From start-up to mainstream: The next phase for Open Education at the TU Delft

The TU Delft has considered itself the frontrunner on Open Education ever since the start of TU Delft Open Courseware in 2006. In the last four years, Open Education has been an important pillar of the TU Delft Open Science Programme, with the aim of developing a policy around the use of Open Educational Resources (OER), and a corresponding technical and support infrastructure for creating and publishing Open Educational Resources (OER). An important part of our work also involves establishing strong collaborations with faculties around open education. In this presentation, I will share our past, present and future approach to implementing open education at TU Delft. This will be the basis for an interactive discussion with the participants of the session on the opportunities they see with implementing a similar approach at UTwente. The aim of the session is to inform UTwente staff about the opportunities and challenges of open education, and to inspire them to adopt and refine a strategy for implementing open education.
