CERT-UT has received information about new forms of, among other things, gift card scams.
Where in the past e-mail was used almost exclusively, now many other ways are used. Perhaps because we can easily block those scam messages, if we are informed fast enough.
Whatsapp is especially popular because everyone seems to have it. The attackers are using photos copied from public sites, such as the University's People Pages. It starts innocently. However, once you respond, they will have a confirmation of your phone number. Then they will try to entice you to buy gift vouchers for example and pass the codes on to them.
- Don not react!
- Make a dump of the screen for later use, such as a notifying CERT-UT or press charges at the police (In Dutch)
- Report the number to Whatsapp.
