FAQ Scholarships

If you Are seeking admission to a degree programme at UT, you may be eligible for one or more scholarships.

Below you can find answers to your questions about scholarship programmes.

General

  • Can I apply for more than one scholarship?

Yes. In fact, we actually encourage you to apply for more than one scholarship programme. Instead of focusing on one scholarship programme look for additional scholarship programmes that may be suited for you as well. Often, scholarship grants can be combined and doing so your chances of obtaining a scholarship to top off all of your study related costs may increase.

When you are applying for more than one scholarship programme at a time, be certain that you note the aim of the scholarship programme and the requirements. At times, scholarship programmes allow one application, for one study programme, per deadline, per level of study. It may well be your multiple applications for the same scholarship programmes in the same deadline are limited or are disregarded on basis of the former.

Please consult our UT Scholarship Finder to find out more on eligibility requirements and required documentation for all types of available scholarship programmes. Please consult our Study Abroad pages for scholarship opportunities for outbound Exchange.

  • Can I get a scholarship for graduate study?

Yes, through our UT Scholarship Finder you will be able to see which programmes apply for which level of studies. This also includes graduate level studies.

Please consult our UT Scholarship Finder to find out more on details and requirements for all types of available scholarship programmes and levels.

  • What are my chances of getting a scholarship?

All scholarship programmes on offer are highly competitive, meaning that the number of applications we receive each deadline largely exceed the number of available scholarships.  Although some scholarships depend on outstanding academic records (‘merit-based scholarships’), your chances of success are often determined by the quality of your application, and whether or not you are in financial need.

There are a number of things you can do to improve your chances of being granted a scholarship. For instance, include all the documentation requested in the requirements of the scholarship you are applying for. These can be found per available scholarship programme via our scholarship finder.  In addition, dedicate plenty of time to writing a motivation if this is required in your application. Most importantly, note the deadlines for the scholarship for which you are applying. The UT is strict in these deadline and does not permit exceptions in this regard.

Lastly, we advise you not to put all your eggs in one basket. Instead of focusing on one scholarship programme look for additional scholarship programmes that may be suited for you as well. Often, scholarship grants can be combined and doing so your chances of obtaining a scholarship to top off all of your study related costs may increase.

  • What types of scholarships are available?

There are a large variety of scholarship opportunities available for the University of Twente and UT students, ranging from partial scholarships to 'full' scholarships. Most scholarships are part of a subsidy framework and are allocated through a scholarship programme.

    Coverage

Largely, the majority of programmes cover tuition fees only. Students will have to cover their own living costs. A few programmes additionally cover travel expenses (likely a nominal fee), visa fees, insurance costs and living expenses for duration of your studies. The latter consitutes as 'full' scholarships. However, note that it is very likely that a 'full' scholarship will not cover all your study related costs. Costs may occur that are not covered by this type of scholarship. Students are expected to pay the remaining costs of study.

    Nature of a scholarship programme

There is also a difference in the nature of scholarship programmes.

    Need-based

Some scholarship programmes grant scholarships based on a financial need. Usually a parent's income is assessed in this regard. Academic performance and/or capacity building may also be considered during your application.

    Capacity building

There are scholarship programmes that focus on certain regions, certain fields (like STEM) or development themes. These are also called capacity building scholarships.

    Merit-based

In addition, there are also merit-based scholarships which largely focus on academic success. If you have a high GPA, you could qualify. Within the UTS scholarship programme, we require that you belong to the best 5 to 10 percent of your class, and an average grade of 7 (out of 10) at the end of the third quartile of the first year. A merit scholarship is not just limited to outstanding academic records. This type of scholarship could also be awarded to a high – achieving student because of other factors, including community service, leadership roles, talent, and extracurricular activities.

    Loan-based

Loan-based scholarship programmes can be a combination of the two aforementioned types of scholarships. This type of scholarship often requires a succesfull academic trajectory, and a (often long-term) commitment to the scholarship provider, country or region. Should one not comply with the requirements (i.e. unsuccesfull in obtaining degree or not return homebound after finishing of studies) the student may be expected to pay back the loan (in part or in full, and sometimes with additional interest). Before accepted a loan-based scholarship you are strongly advised to check the conditions and consult with family or friends, as it may be a long-time commitment and can cause debts for years to come.

  • When is the best time to apply for a scholarship?

An application process from application (by you) to granting of scholarships by a scholarship provider may take 6 to 10 months. Therefore, we strongly advise you to start early in your search for financial assistance. Preferably more than one year prior to the start of your academic programme. As most programme require a set of documentation as part of your application, it is evident you will need to start to gather these documents early on in your application process.

Since all scholarships programmes for degrees at the UT require unconditional admission to a study programme at the UT, academic assessment by the UT also may take ample time. Academic assessment may take up to a month.

Most scholarship programmes open their application phase at 6 to 10 months prior to the start of a study programme or a study abroad trajectory.

For degree programmes at the UT, the UT only starts your visa applicaton process once you have secured funding for the study programme. In this light, and in case you rely on the outcome of a scholarship allocation, be certain that you will receive a grant award letter well in time of the visa application deadline.

We also advise you to not put all your eggs in one basket. Instead of focusing on one scholarship programme look into other scholarship programmes that may be suited for you as well. Often, scholarship grants can be combined and doing so your chances of obtaining a scholarship to top off all of your study related costs may increase.

    • Are you academically excellent (in case of a merit-based programme);
    • Is this your first study programme at the University of Twente;

  • As a scholarship recipient, can I work next to studying (incl. internship) at UT?

Working next to your study is allowed in the Netherlands. There are a multitude of factors you need to take note of, before you do accept a job (and subsequent salary), either at or outside of the UT.

One of those factors is indeed if you are a UTS, OTS and/or HS recipients.

    Started in 2020 and later

When you receive a UTS, OTS or HS scholarship you are allowed to work at UT or elsewhere in the Netherlands. You must adhere though to the IND rules for work next to study and your scholarship is not taxed as income.

There are also immigration restrictions and important implications to consider before accepting a job.

Before you accept a job, we advise you to check the webpage of the Immigration Office of the Ministry of Justice and Security in the Netherlands.

Do note that an employer has to apply a employment permit (a TWV) before you are allowed to work at his company/place. Also you will have to pay tax for the salary you are going to receive. The tax office will charge you for the income tax.

Again, please check all the requirements for work and study, and your financial consequences of working next to study, before accepting a job. It may very well be, that your salary may have an negative affect due tax and insurance on your total income.

Please note that work, as described here, does not entail an internship trajectory as part of your UT Bachelor's or Master's programme.

When you receive a Kipaji or Prof de Winter scholarship you are not allowed to work at the UT based on the limitations of the scholarship regulations.

  • I am a foundation year (Navitas) student and am searching for a scholarship to continue with my UT bachelor's

Within the foundation year no UT-funded scholarships are available. For the bachelor studies you might not have the chance to apply for scholarships, since the application deadlines for scholarships might have expired before you have finalized your two-third study period to be assessed for a scholarship.

  • I am a UTS and/or OTS recipient and personal circumstances are causing a study delay; is there an extension of the UTS or OTS scholarship available?

If you are a UTS or OTS recipient, then yes, you may be entitled to an extension in case of a study delay due to personal circumstances in one of the FOBOS categories:

    • Illness or pregnancy and childbirth
    • A physical, sensory or other impairment
    • Special family circumstances

    Additional conditions for eligibility are:

    • The extension period is subsequent to the nominal study period for which the UTS or OTS scholarship was obtained
    • The Committee Personal Circumstances (CPO) has formally acknowledged these personal circumstances and has assessed the extent of the delay caused by the circumstances
    • You can only apply once for a UTS or OTS scholarship extension during the nominal duration of the study programme

In case you meet these conditions, you can find the full procedure on how to apply for an extension on the website of the Scholarship Office.

The deadline to apply for an extension is 15 June 2023.
